Jonesborough, TN The Virginia men’s golf team shot 9-over 297 and is in 13th place after the opening round of play at the Bank of Tennessee at The Ridges in Jonesborough, Tenn. Host school East Tennessee State owns the early lead at 6-under 282, one shot ahead of Kentucky.

Virginia stood at 2-over after the first 14 holes, but a rash of bogeys on the final four holes were the Cavaliers undoing. Virginia was led by a pair of 1-over 73s by freshman Henry Smart and senior Greg Carlin. They are tied for 32nd after the opening 18 holes. Will Collins shot 75 and is 52nd while Conrad Von Borsig and Steven Rojas both shot 76 and are in 62nd place.

Kentucky’s Ben Fuqua leads the field at 5-under 67.

The second round of the tournament will take Saturday with the final round Sunday.
