Cavaliers Ranked for First Time

The Virginia football team is ranked 19th in this week’s Bowl Championship Series (BCS) standings released Sunday afternoon. The Cavaliers are also ranked 24th in this week’s USA Today coaches poll.

This is the first time in nearly three years Virginia has appeared in the BCS rankings. The Cavaliers were listed in the BCS rankings throughout the 2004 season and reached as high as 11th on Nov. 8. Virginia was ranked 18th in the final BCS standings released Dec. 5.

The Cavaliers also make their first appearance of the season in the USA Today coaches poll, their first since they were ranked 24th on Oct. 16, 2005.

“It’s kind of outside our focus right now,” said head coach Al Groh of his team’s rankings. “It’s not really pertinent to the goals we have for the team, which is to try to win our division of the Atlantic Coast Conference.”

Virginia has won six consecutive games, the sixth-longest winning streak in the country. The Cavaliers are 6-1 overall this season and in first place in the ACC Coastal Division with a 3-0 league record.

The Cavaliers’ game at Maryland this Saturday (Oct. 20) is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. and will be televised by ESPN2.
