Virginia cornerback Ras-I Dowling has been named to The Sporting News ACC All-Freshman Team.

A true freshman, Dowling came on strong late in the season. Most of his early-season contributions occurred on special teams, but following the midseason injury to starting cornerback Chris Cook, Dowling saw his time in the secondary increase significantly.

He played in 11 regular season games, including starts against Wake Forest and Miami, and ranks ninth among all ACC freshmen in tackling with an average of 3.36 tackles per game. Dowling leads conference rookies with eight pass break-ups and shares the team lead with two interceptions. An excellent special teams player, he leads the team with 16 tackles on kickoff coverage and is second with five stops on the punt team.

Dowling made a career-high seven tackles against NC State and tied the school record with five pass break-ups. He also intercepted the first pass of his career and picked off another one the following week against Wake Forest.
