CHARLOTTESVILLE Junior defender Nikki Krzysik (Clifton, N.J.) was named the Mid-Atlantic Region Player of the Year by Soccer Buzz Magazine. She is the only defender to be named the top player in a region this season.

Krzysik, a first-team NSCAA All-American, had three goals and four assists offensively while anchoring a Virginia defense that led the nation in goals against average (0.40) and set a school record with 15 shutouts.

Krzysik was one of three Cavaliers named first-team All Mid-Atlantic Region by the website. Senior defender Becky Sauerbrunn (St. Louis, Mo.) and senior forward Shannon Foley (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) were also selected to the first team. Sauerbrunn was a first team NSCAA All-American and the ACC Defensive Player of the Year. Foley led the Cavaliers in scoring this season with 10 goals and nine assists.

Goalkeeper Chantel Jones (Midlothian, Va.) and midfielder Sinead Farrelly (Havertown, Pa.) were both second-team All Mid-Atlantic Region and to the Mid-Atlantic Region All-Freshman Team. Jones, a second team All-ACC selection ranked second nationally with a 0.41 goals against average. Farrelly had five goals and four assists and was the first Cavalier freshman to earn first-team All-ACC honors in a decade. Forward Meghan Lenczyk (McLean, Va.) was also named to the All-Freshman team after a six goal, three assist rookie campaign.

The Cavaliers concluded the season with a 13-4-6 record after falling to top-ranked UCLA 2-1 in overtime in the NCAA round of 16. Krzysik, Farrelly, Jones, and Lenczyk are among 21 players on this season’s roster with eligibility remaining for next year.
