WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. The Virginia women’s tennis team suffered its first conference loss of the season, falling to Wake Forest 5-2 Saturday afternoon at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center. The Cavaliers fall to 5-5 overall and 1-1 in the ACC with the loss.

The Demon Deacons took a 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point. Virginia recorded a win at No. 1 doubles and Amanda Rales (Bethesda, Md.) and Lara Alexander (London, England) defeated Sasha Kulikova and Sierra Poske 8-4. Wake Forest scored wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to take the opening point.

In singles, Wake Forest won four of the six matches to seal the 5-2 dual match victory. Virginia got a win at No. 1 singles where Rales, playing the first match of her career as a ranked singles player, topped Alex Hirsch 6-4, 6-4. At No. 4 singles, senior Lindsey Pereira (Arlington, Texas) won in a third set superbreaker, defeating Poske 2-6, 7-5, 10-8.

The Cavaliers continue their roadtrip on Sunday as they visit No. 52 NC State. Match time in Raleigh is 1 p.m.
