CHARLOTTESVILLE After leading Virginia to victories over No. 26 Miami and No. 10 Florida State last week, Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) was named ACC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, conference officials announced Tuesday. The Cavalier senior won a pair of matches at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles in the wins.
The selection marked the second consecutive week Devvarman has been honored and he leads the conference with three selections this season. Last year he set a conference record with four selections. For his career, Devvarman has eight ACC Player of the Week awards, the most in conference history.
Last week, Devvarman led Virginia to a 7-0 win over Miami and a 6-1 win over Florida State as the Cavaliers extended their winning streak against ACC competition to 24 matches, tying the school record. In singles, he defeated the two highest ranked singles players in the conference not on the Virginia roster. On Friday, he topped No. 4 Daniel Vallverdu of Miami 6-0, 6-1. He followed that performance with a 6-1, 6-4 win over No. 40 Jean-Yves Aubone of Florida State on Sunday.
Devvarman paired up with Treat Huey to extend their doubles winning streak against ACC opponents to 19 straight, dating back to the 2007 season. The top-ranked tandem in the nation defeated No. 54 David Rosenfeld and Vivek Subramanian of Miami 8-2 and No. 27 Aubone and Clint Bowles of Florida State 8-5.
The Cavaliers will return to action this week as they visit North Carolina and Duke. Friday’s match with the Tar Heels is slated for 4 p.m. and Sunday’s match with the Blue Devils is at 1 p.m.
