CHARLOTTESVILLE Virginia sophomore guard Monica Wright was an honorable mention selection on the Associated Press women’s basketball All-America team, announced Tuesday. Wright adds the accolade to a list that already includes WBCA Region 2 All-America, second team All-ACC, ACC all-defensive team and ACC all-tournament team.
The conference’s Rookie of the Year a season ago, Wright burst onto the national scene this season by leading the Cavaliers in scoring (17.6 points per game) and steals (2.4 per game).
She notched her 1,000th-career point this season and set the single-season scoring record by a UVa sophomore with 598 points this year. In just her second year, she ranks No. 22 on Virginia’s all-time scoring list.
Named to the Naismith Trophy Preseason Watch List, Wright was named the ACC’s Player of the Week twice this season and captained USA Basketball’s U-19 World Championship team prior to the start of the season.
