No. 24 Baseball Visits Maryland for Weekend Series

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia baseball team travels to Maryland this weekend for a three-game ACC series at Shipley Field in College Park, Md. Game one is at 7 p.m. Friday, while the second game will be at 4 p.m. Saturday and the finale at 1 p.m. Sunday.
All three games will be broadcast on WINA 1070-AM and streamed online at VirginiaSports.com.
Virginia (26-9, 8-7 ACC) earned two wins this week, defeating Longwood (6-0) Tuesday and Liberty (7-3) Wednesday. Maryland (20-14, 5-10) also notched two victories this week with wins over Coppin State (7-1) Tuesday and Mount Saint Mary’s (12-3) Wednesday.
Virginia ranks third in the ACC in pitching (3.13 ERA) and fourth in batting average (.304). UVa’s three weekend starters each rank among the top 15 in the conference in ERA. Jacob Thompson (Jr., Danville, Va.) ranks 15th at 3.59 and is scheduled to match up with Maryland righty Scott Swinson on Friday. Saturday, UVa’s Pat McAnaney (Sr., Syracuse, N.Y.), the ACC leader in ERA at 1.61, will face Terrapin RHP Mike Sufczynski. Sunday, Virginia’s Andrew Carraway (Jr., Marietta, Ga.), ranked 12th in the conference in ERA at 3.16, pitches against Maryland RHP Kevin Biringer.
Virginia leads the all-time series, 93-72-1. The 93 wins marks Virginia’s second most victories against any school (VMI, 97). Last season the Cavaliers swept a three-game series with the Terrapins to extend their winning streak in the series to 15 straight dating back to April 6, 2002, in College Park.
Nick Jowers leads the Terps with a .379 batting average (seventh in the ACC), while Mike Murphy ranks fourth in ACC with nine home runs. Maryland ranks 11th in the ACC in batting (.282) and ninth in pitching (5.22).
