CHARLOTTESVILLE After leading Virginia to victories over No. 49 NC State and No. 30 Wake Forest last week, Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) was named ACC Men’s Tennis Co-Player of the Week, conference officials announced Tuesday. He shares the award with Chris Kearney of North Carolina.
The selection was the fourth of the year for Devvarman, tying the conference record for most in a season set by Devvarman last year. For his career, Devvarman has a record nine ACC Player of the Week awards, more than twice as many as any other player in conference history.
Last week, Devvarman helped the Cavaliers complete their second consecutive undefeated ACC regular season with a 5-2 win over the Wolfpack and a 7-0 win over the Demon Deacons. He posted straight set wins over No. 64 James McGee of NC State and No. 86 Steven Forman of Wake Forest. In addition, he teamed with Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) for a pair of wins at No. 1 doubles. At No. 1 singles, Devvarman went 11-0 in conference play while recording a 9-1 mark at No. 1 doubles with Huey.
The Cavaliers travel to Altamonte Springs, Fla. this week for the 2008 ACC Tournament. Top-seeded Virginia opens play on Friday at 9 a.m. against the winner of Thursday’s first round match between NC State and Georgia Tech.
