CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Virginia senior relief pitcher Michael Schwimer (Alexandria, Va.) has been named to the watch list for the Dick Howser Trophy, presented by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and given to the top player in college baseball. The midseason watch list is comprised of 50 candidates.

The Dick Howser Trophy is given in memory of the former Florida State University All-America shortstop and major league player and manager who died of brain cancer in 1987.

Criteria for consideration for the trophy include performance on the field, leadership, moral character and courage, qualities that were exemplified by Dick Howser’s life.

Schwimer has a 2-1 record, 0.96 earned run average and league-best 11 saves this season. He also ranks third nationally in saves. In 18.2 innings, he has allowed just two earned runs, nine hits and five walks while striking out 17. Opponents are batting only .148 against Schwimer.

The membership of the NCBWA will choose the Dick Howser Trophy based on three rounds of voting. The 2008 winner will be announced at the College World Series in Omaha on June 14.

Schwimer and the 16th-ranked Cavaliers travel to top-ranked Miami this weekend.
