OAK RIDGE, Tenn. No. 9 Virginia rowing finished with 407 points, including a victory in the Varsity Eight, to capture the overall Aramark South/Central Regional Championship and the South Region Championship Sunday at Melton Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn.

Virginia has now won the South Region five times in the last six years (2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008) and the South/Central team championship four times in the last five seasons (2004, 2005, 2007, 2008).

“In a competition like this, getting a win is a big deal and the Varsity Eight rowed a great race,” head coach Kevin Sauer said. “Winning the team title, it’s obvious everyone contributed.”

Rounding out the top three in the overall standings were Michigan State (371; Central Region Champion) and Ohio State (351).

In the first race of the day, Virginia’s Varsity Eight crew (Caitlin Mixter, Jennifer Cromwell, Rebecca Ryall, Lauren Hutchins, Kelsie Chaudoin, Desiree Burns, Augusta Stratos, Bridget Wandelt, Katrin Sydlik) started strong and held on for a first-place finish with a time of 6:33.60. The Cavaliers edged Michigan State (6:35.80), which was followed by Michigan (6:37.00), Clemson (6:38.10), Wisconsin (6:40.10) and Tennessee (6:40.30).

For the weekend, the Varsity Eight swept all three of its races as it now looks forward to the NCAA Championships which begin May 30.

The second race of the day was the Second Varsity Eight (Mary Eddy, Amanda Chase, Lauren Shook, Helen Tompkins, Marie Long, Claudia Blandford, Annie Bohlen, Adrienne Egge and Victoria Burke), and Virginia came away with a second-place finish (6:42.10) in the grand final. Ohio State’s crew was victorious (6:39.20).

The Varsity Four crew (Cristine Candland, Diane Leigh, Allison Brennan, Nora Phillips, Schafer Bomstein) also rowed to a second-place finish (7:28.29), as it was edged by Michigan State (7:26.70) for the title.

Virginia’s Novice Eight (Laura Hendrie, Susie Chalker, Christine Roper, Lauren Heimburg, Eleanor Giles, Jenn Lampen, Hannah Jenkins, Caroline Sweeny and Emily Farrior) concluded its season with a second-place finish in its final (7:05.00).

In the Open Four grand final, Virginia “A” (Taylor Gilmore, Summers Nelson, Shalane Carlson, Mariana Lima and Pamela Baylor) finished fifth (7:43.00)

Virginia “B” crew (Sarah Pichardo, Colleen Beichert, Jessica Streufert, Hannah Jordan, Edidiong Umoh) finished third in the petite final (7:53.90).

Having won the South Region Championship, the Cavaliers await the announcement of NCAA teams, which is Tuesday.
