CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Virginia senior pitcher Pat McAnaney (Syracuse, N.Y.) has been named one of 50 semifinalists for the 2008 USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award, presented to nation’s elite amateur baseball player. The award will be presented July 16 in New York City.

A 2008 Second-Team All-ACC honoree, McAnaney is 4-4 this season with a 3.09 earned run average. He leads the ACC with three complete games and ranks among the ACC leaders in strikeouts (91), innings pitched (78.2) and batting average against (.223).

McAnaney, a two-time ACC Pitcher of the Week recipient this year, has had a strong season and been extremely consistent, pitching six or more innings in nine of his 12 starts and allowing two runs and two walks or fewer in nine of his outings.

In his career, McAnaney ranks fourth in winning percentage (.783), ninth in strikeouts (211) and 11th in ERA (2.69) and wins (18). His total of 91 strikeouts this season stands 10th on the UVa single-season ledger.
