CHARLOTTESVILLE Playing in its final preseason exhibition, the Virginia men’s soccer team shut out Old Dominion, 3-0, Saturday night at Klckner Stadium. The Cavaliers now turn their attention to the regular season, which begins next weekend with the Virginia Soccer Classic.

“Obviously we’re pleased with this result,” Virginia head coach George Gelnovatch said. “With so many new faces half this team is freshmen or transfers it is a tribute to how hard the players worked in the preseason and how well they have formed cohesiveness.”

Virginia got on the board in the 17th minute when two freshmen, Tony Tchani and Brian Ownby, connected for the first goal of the game. Tchani found Ownby on the left side of the field, and Ownby finished a hard shot low past ODU goalkeeper Brennan Kirkpatrick.

Just over a minute later, Tchani and Ownby connected again, this time on assists to junior Ross LaBauex, who headed the Cavaliers’ second goal into the net in the 18th minute. LaBauex’s header came off of Ownby’s cross after a pass from Tchani.

In the second half with a 2-0 cushion, Ownby struck again in the 66th minute, finishing a long ball from Karter Smith and beating Kirkpatrick one-on-one.

Virginia out-shot ODU, 18-6, and held a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks. Dan Louisignau got the start in goal for UVa, and had a complete-game shutout with two saves.

Offensively, Ownby finished with two goals and an assist to lead Virginia.

For the Monarchs, Nane Joseph and Dylan Montambo recorded shots on goal. Evan Newton started in goal for ODU and made three saves. Kirkpatrick entered in the 12th minute and remained for the rest of the contest, making two saves.

The Cavaliers host the Virginia Soccer Classic next weekend (Aug. 29 and 31). First up is a 8 p.m. Friday night match-up with St. John’s to open the regular season.
