CHARLOTTESVILLE — The Virginia mens tennis team kicked off its 2008 fall season Friday as play began at the UVa Fall Invitational at the Snyder Tennis Center. Six Cavaliers advanced to the quarterfinals in the two A singles draws and two doubles teams reached the semifinals, which to be held on Saturday.

In the A-1 singles draw, three Cavaliers advanced to the quarterfinals. No. 2 seed Sanam Singh (Chandigarh, India) won his opening round match, as did first-years Drew Courtney (Clifton, Va.) and David Nguyen (Columbia, Md.). In the A-2 singles draw, No. 1 seed Houston Barrick (Brentwood, Tenn.), No. 2 seed Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.) and Lee Singer (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) all scored opening round wins. In the B singles draw, first-year Reese Milner (Los Angeles, Calif.) also won his collegiate debut to advance.

In doubles, the top seeded team of Barrick and Singh won two matches on Friday to reach the semifinals of Flight A. In Flight B, the team of Nguyen and Milner advanced to the semifinals with a pair of wins.

Play continues Saturday and runs through Sunday at the Snyder Tennis Center.
