ATHENS, Ga. The Virginia women’s tennis team concluded play at the 2008 Bulldog Invitational Sunday at the Dan Magill Tennis center with another strong performance. The Cavaliers went 5-1 in singles and 2-1 in doubles on the final day of play.

“We first want to thank Georgia and our host families for putting on such a first class tournament,” said head coach Mark Guilbeau. “This was an extremely successful and enjoyable weekend for us, playing against some quality competition. We are looking forward to a good week of practice before hosting the UVa Invitational next weekend. It will be nice to get a chance to play in front of our great fans at the Snyder Tennis Center for the first time this year.”

The day opened with doubles play and the Cavaliers posted a pair of victories. The teams of Neela Vaez (Perrysburg, Ohio) and Claire Bartlett (Chattanooga, Tenn.), and Lindsey Herdenbergh (Fairfax Station, Va.) and Amanda Rales (Bethesda, Md.) both won against teams from Indiana.

In singles, the Cavaliers went 5-1 against opponents from Indiana. Hardenbergh posted her first career ranked win, topping No. 121 Charlotte Martin. Emily Fraser (Rye, N.Y.), Jennifer Stevens (Miami, Fla.), Rales, and Bartlett also won in singles play on Sunday. For the tournament, Virginia was 14-4 in singles play, led by an 8-1 record by the three Cavalier first-years.

Virginia returns home to host the UVa Invitational next weekend at the Snyder Tennis Center.
