Charleston, SC The 14th-ranked Virginia women’s golf team continued its torrid play this fall by finishing tied for first after the opening round of the Cougar Classic in Charleston, S.C. The Cavaliers shot even-par 288 to share the first-round lead with ninth-ranked Georgia.

Virginia’s Whitney Neuhauser (Barboursville, Va.) carded a career-best score of 4-under 68 to share the lead in stroke play with Georgia’s Mallory Hetzel. Neuhauser’s previous best round was 72, which she equaled last weekend at the season-opening Fall Preview.

It marks the second straight tournament a Cavalier has stood in first place after the opening round. Senior Jennie Arseneault also shot 68 during the first round of the Fall Preview to lead the field. She finished seventh overall.

Arseneault opened this week’s tournament with a 72 and is in 13th place. Senior Lene Krog (Lier, Norway) carded a 1-over 73 in her first competitive round this fall and is tied for 16th. Joy Kim shot 75 and is 39th and Calle Nielson rounded out UVa’s scoring with a 76 and is in 54th place.

The second round of the 22-team tournament is scheduled for Monday and the final round takes place Tuesday. South Carolina is in third place, two shots behind the leaders while NC State is fourth at 291.
