Cavaliers Open Play at UVa Invitational

CHARLOTTESVILLE — The Virginia women’s tennis team kicked off its first home event of the season, the 2008 UVa Invitational, as play began Friday at the Snyder Tennis Center. The Cavaliers posted a 2-1 doubles record and a 4-2 singles record on the first day of the event.
“It is great to be hosting such a strong tournament once again. It looked like there was a lot of good tennis being played in all of the matches. I was very impressed with our team’s play, especially in the doubles. There were some very bright moments in the singles as well. We want to thank all of the fans that came out to support us and look forward to another good day tomorrow.”
Play began with doubles and the Cavaliers scored a pair of wins. Emily Fraser (Rye, N.Y.) and Amanda Rales (Bethesda, Md.) scored an 8-3 win over Jessica Keener and Catherine Kellner of Marshall. Neela Vaez (Perrysburg, Ohio) and Lindsey Hardenbergh (Fairfax Station, Va) topped Marshall’s Thaddea Lock and Kristina Koprcina 8-1.
In singles, Virginia posted four straight set wins. Hardenbergh topped Lock 6-0, 6-1, Claire Bartlett (Chattanooga, Tenn.) defeated Deanna Bailey of Mrashall 6-4, 6-2, Rales downed Keener 6-0, 6-3 and Vaez scored a 6-2, 6-4 win over Kellner.
Play continues Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Snyder Tennis Center. The tournament concludes Sunday, with play beginning at 9 a.m.
