CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Virginia junior left-hander Matt Packer (Germantown, Tenn.) was named to two preseason award lists Tuesday. Packer earned a spot on the preseason watch list for the 2009 Stopper of the Year Award, presented by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, and also on CollegeBaseballInsider.com’s preseason All-America team. He was a second-team selection as a relief pitcher on the CBI preseason All-America team.

Packer led NCAA Division I pitchers in earned run average last year with a 1.14 mark. The mark was the fourth-lowest ERA in school history. He also posted a 6-3 record and allowed just nine earned runs, 51 hits and 15 walks in 71.1 innings. Batters hit an ACC-low .202 against him.

The ACC led the way with nine players named to the preseason Stopper of the Year watch list. The Big 12 and West Coast Conference added four pitchers each. Packer was one of 10 ACC players selected to the CBI Preseason All-America squad.

Virginia opens the 2009 season at 4 p.m. Friday at home against Bucknell.
