CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia men’s tennis team continued its strong play at the second annual UVa Ranked Plus One Invitational Saturday at the Boar’s Head Sports Club as rain moved the event indoors. The Cavaliers had seven players advance to the semifinals of the four A singles draws at the event, which features 31 nationally ranked players. Virginia also won one of the four doubles championships on Saturday.

In the A-1 draw, No. 3 seed Houston Barrick (Brentwood, Tenn.) rolled to a straight set win over Vincente Jolie of Boise State to reach the semifinals. He is joined in the A-1 semifinals by first-year Jarmere Jenkins (College Park, Ga.), who rallied for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over No. 62 ranked Viktor Maksimcuk of Louisville.

Sanam Singh (Chandigarh, India), the top-seed in the A-2 flight, advanced to the semifinals with a straight set win over Simon Childs of Louisville. Steven Eelkman Rooda (Amersfoort, The Netherlands) also reached the semifinals, after a 6-2, 7-6 upset over No. 53 ranked James Meredith of Boise State in the quarterfinals.

Lee Singer (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and Drew Courtney (Clifton, Va.) both advanced to the semifinals in the A-3 flight. Singer topped Iain Atkinson of Wake Forest 7-6, 6-4, while Courtney scored a 6-4, 6-4 win over No. 61 ranked Keziel Juneau of William & Mary.

In the A-4 Flight, Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.) topped Luka Somen of Virginia Tech in straight sets.

Earlier in the day, the doubles semifinals and finals were played. The Virginia team of Jenkins and Shabaz won the A-3 draw title, while the team Courtney and Singer reached the final of the A-4 draw before falling to No. 22 ranked Peers and Melo of Middle Tennessee.

Play continues on Sunday at 8 a.m. Matches will be played outdoors at the Snyder Tennis Center (weather permitting). Sunday’s schedule consists of two rounds of singles.
