Third-Ranked Cavaliers Shut Out Longwood, 7-0

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The third-ranked Virginia field hockey team improved to 14-1 this season with a 7-0 shut out of Longwood Tuesday. Sophomore Pagie Selenski notched her second hat trick of the season, while senior Traci Ragukas scored a pair of goals. Juniors Kaitlyn Hiltz and Inga Stöckel also contributed goals in the winning effort.
Selenski recorded her first career hat trick earlier this season in a 5-0 win over Ohio. The Shavertown, Pa., native also contributed two assists to go along with her three goals. Stöckel led the team with three assists.
The Cavaliers outshot Longwood 25-4 for the game, including a 16-3 advantage in the second half. UVa also took 11 penalty corners to four for the Lancers.
“We were able to find the open players quicker in the second half,” Virginia head coach Michele Madison said. “We tried to pick up the tempo of the game and play before Longwood was set up and that really gave us some opportunities.”
Ragukas put Virginia on the board in the 16th minute, scoring on the left post of a pass from Selenski. Selenski then notched her first score on an unassisted breakaway as the Cavaliers led 2-0 at the half.
Virginia came out dominating the second half with five scores. Selenski and Hiltz had back-to-back goals within a minute of each other early in the half. Selenki’s score was on a long pass from Stöckel near the 50, while Hiltz tallied her goal from the post off a cross from Selenski.
Stöckel then assisted on Ragukas’ second goal, on another long pass in the 64th minute. Selenski recorded her third score on an UVa penalty corner opportunity, again with Stöckel assisting.
Stöckel then rounded out the scoring with a goal of her own, gathering the ball on the left side and putting it past Longwood’s Erin Bollinger for a 7-0 win.
Bollinger finished with 10 saves in the cage for the Lancers. Junior Kim Kastuk and sophomore Adrienne Ostroff both saw time in goal for the Orange and Blue.
Virginia will play host to No. 2 North Carolina in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at 1 p.m. Saturday at the U-Hall Turf Field.
“We just finished playing three games in four days, so we have to get rested,” Madison said. “The kids need to recover and we need to refocus. We will have to raise our game, that’s for sure. North Carolina is good at every position so every single person will have to be ready.”
