CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s basketball team is ranked 14th in the Associated Press 2009-10 preseason poll, released on Friday (Oct. 30).

Virginia returns six letterwinners, including ACC Preseason Player of the Year and preseason All-American Monica Wright (Woodbridge, Va.) from last year’s team that finished with a 24-10 overall record and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Connecticut was the unanimous No. 1 selection in the poll, followed by Stanford, Ohio State, Notre Dame and North Carolina. Duke, Baylor, Tennessee, LSU and Michigan State rounded out the top 10.

Virginia begins the 2009-10 campaign with a road game at UMBC on Nov. 13. Head coach Debbie Ryan, now in her 33rd season with the Cavaliers, will be seeking career win No. 700 in the season-opener.
