CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia softball team (2-5) is set for a round-robin tournament against Notre Dame and George Washington this weekend in Newport News, Va. The Cavalier Invitational was moved to Christopher Newport University (CNU) earlier this week because of unplayable conditions at The Park. Live statistics will be available through VirginiaSports.com and admission to all games at CNU’s Captains Park is free.

The Cavaliers will take on George Washington at 9 a.m. Friday before playing Notre Dame at approximately 2 p.m. On Sunday, Virginia will open the day against the Irish at 12:30 p.m. followed by a 2 p.m. contest with the Colonials.

UVa is coming off a 1-4 weekend at LSU’s Tiger Classic, which was highlighted by a 2-1 upset over fourth-ranked Michigan. Senior Sarah Tacke, who hit the game-winning home run to lift UVa over the Wolverines, was named to the all-tournament team.

Tacke leads Virginia at the plate this season, compiling a .375 batting average through seven games. Tacke and teammate Nicole Koren each have two home runs, and Koren leads the squad with six RBI and five runs to go along with her .368 batting average.

Freshman Melanie Mitchell continues to be solid in the circle with six starts this season for UVa. She is limiting opponents to a .276 batting average through 29 2/3 innings of work and has also struck out 30.

Notre Dame is 4-4 on the year and is coming off a 3-0 performance at Southern Miss’ Mizuno Classic last weekend, where the Fighting Irish defeated Louisiana Tech 1-0, Southern Miss 7-6 and Stephen F. Austin 3-0.

ND’s Erin Marrone leads the team with a .400 average, while teammate Katie Fleury is hitting .333 while contributing a team-best six runs. Christine Lux has a .661 average in addition to her team-best seven RBI and two home runs. Pitcher Jody Valdivia has a 2.48 ERA in the circle through 36 2/3 innings of work. She has 50 strikeouts on the season and is limiting opponents to a .200 batting average.

George Washington will begin its 2010 season this weekend at the UVa Invitational. The Colonials finished the 2009 campaign with a 16-33 record, including a 6-14 mark in Atlantic-10 play. Junior Katie Terrazas hit .260 a year ago with 18 RBI and five home runs and is back as the team’s leading returning hitter. Sophomore Lauren Wilson also hit .241 and recorded a team-best eight doubles as a rookie in 2009.
