Aiken, SC – It did not take long for Virginia sophomore Ben Kohles (Cary, N.C.) to get his game into high gear in Virginia’s first outing of the spring. After shooting even par 70 during the morning round of the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate in Aiken, S.C., Kohles posted a 7-under 63 during Monday’s afternoon round. His score ties the UVa single-round scoring mark and is the best 18-hole score in the 13-year history of the tournament.

Kohles’ 63 equals the UVa scoring mark Cole Kelly set during the opening round of the 1996 Red River Classic at the Dallas Athletic Club. Kelly’s score was 9-under par while Kohles’ effort was 7-under on the par-70 Palmetto Golf Course, the fourth older golf course in the United States.

Kohles owns a three-shot lead entering Tuesday’s final round of play at 7-under 133. Liberty’s Max McKay is in second place at 136.

Kohles entered the tournament leading the 19th-ranked Cavaliers with a 70.80 stroke average. He won one tournament last fall and finished in the top-10 in four of five outings. His previous best single-round effort was a 66 (5-under) he posted to start the season at the Maryland Intercollegiate. He is currently ranked No. 28 in the Golfweek individual standings.

Behind Kohles the Cavaliers shot 1-under 279 during the second round and are in fifth place at 13-over 573. Chattanooga leads the field at 2-over 562.

Kyle Stough posted UVa’s second best score at 6-over 146. He had back-to-back rounds of 73 to stand 29th overall. Will Collins used a second round score of 70 to move up to 37th overall at 8-over 148. Amory Davis and Steven Rojas are tied for 46th at 10-over 150.

The third and final round of the 54-hole tournament will begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
