Virginia and Collins Finish Second at ACC Championships

New London, NC – Behind the solid play of junior Will Collins, the No. 21 Virginia men’s golf team finished second at the ACC Championships. The tournament was held at the Old North State Club in New London, N.C. Virginia’s finish marked the seventh time in 10 tournaments this season the team has placed either second or third.

Virginia shot even par 288 Sunday to finish at 10-under 854. Georgia Tech, ranked No. 17, won its third title in the last four years at 23-under 841. The Cavaliers’ finish was the best since placing second in 1996. UVa had placed ninth at the last two ACC tournaments. No. 32 Wake Forest and No. 22 Duke shared third place at 855.

Collins, from nearby Salisbury, N.C., shot 1-under 71 during the final round to finish second overall at 8-under 208. It was the best tournament finish of his career. He opened with a 69 Friday and shot 68 during the second round. Collins’ score at the ACCs was his best tournament performance this year by five strokes.

Georgia Tech’s Chesson Hadley took medalist honors by two shots at 10-under 206.

Collins becomes the fourth Cavalier to finish as the runner up at the ACC Championships. Curt Coulter was the last to do it, placing second in 1988. Glen Mitchell was second in 1958 and Pete Arend was second in 1954. He won the ACC title the following year in 1955. Collins previous ACC finishes included 26th place last year and 24th place as a freshman.

Sophomore Ben Kohles just missed a top-10 finish, placing 11th overall at 3-under 213. He shot 2-over 74 during the opening round after carding a 70 and 69 to start the tournament. Kohles placed 40th at the tournament last year.

Amory Davis and Mac McLaughlin, both playing in their first ACC Championship, tied for 27th at 3-over 219. Kyle Stough was 43rd at 225. He shot 2-under 70 Sunday.

Virginia will host the Cavalier Classic Saturday, May 1 and Sunday, May 2 at Birdwood Golf Course. The tournament features 18 holes of play each day. Each round will start at 8 a.m.
