GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Virginia track and field team has advanced three Cavaliers to the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championships after the first day of the NCAA Eastern Preliminary Round at North Carolina A&T’s Irwin Belk Track. Senior All-American Meghan Briggs, sophomore All-American Ryan Collins and sophomore Tara Karin each used top-12 finishes in their respective events to advance to the national meet.

Briggs picked up a ninth-place finish in the javelin with a throw of 152’ 11” to advance to NCAAs for the third-straight season, while Karin used a personal-best throw of 152’ 0” to finish 10th. Karin will be making her first-ever trip to NCAAs, while Briggs finished ninth last year to earn her first-ever All-America honor.

To close out the day, Collins picked up a third-place finish in the 10k in 29:27.20 to advance to his first NCAA Outdoor Championship, while senior Trey Miller wrapped up his career by narrowly missing the national meet. Miller finished 15th in 30:36.65.

In first round action on the track, senior All-American Steve Delice advanced to tomorrow’s quarterfinals of the 400m hurdles by finishing second in his heat – and third overall – with a personal-best time of 50.67. His mark now ranks second all-time at UVa, trailing just Karl Williams’ finish of 50.34 from 1979.

Senior Alex Bowman also advanced to the quarterfinals of the 1500m, while freshman All-American Robby Andrews and sophomore All-American Lance Roller qualified in the 800m. Bowman won his heat in 3:48.41 to advance in the 1500m and will take the 11th-best mark into Saturday’s semifinal of the event.

In the 800m, both Andrews and Roller automatically advanced to tomorrow’s semifinal. Andrews won his heat in 1:49.19, while Roller finished runner-up in his section – finishing with a time of 1:49.14.

Competition will continue tomorrow, beginning with field events at 10 a.m., while track events will kick off at 4:30 p.m. Cavaliers finishing in the top-12 of their respective qualifying events will advance to the NCAA Championships.
