Delice Smashes School Record in 400mH; Four Cavaliers Qualify for NCAAs

The men’s and women’s 3000m steeplechase races, originally scheduled for tonight, have been rescheduled for Saturday. Virginia juniors Steve Finley and Andrew Mearns are scheduled to compete in the men’s 48-competitor section, with the top-12 finishers advancing to NCAAs. They are now scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning.
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior All-American Steve Delice shattered Virginia’s school record in the 400m hurdles on Friday and led four more Cavaliers in qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on the second of the NCAA Preliminary Round at North Carolina A&T’s Irwin Belk Track. Virginia now has seven Cavaliers who have punched their ticket to Eugene, Ore., for the national meet. Delice, junior Andy Fahringer, sophomore All-American Lance Roller and freshman All-American Robby Andrews all qualified in their respective events today, while senior All-American Meghan Briggs, sophomore All-American Ryan Collins and Tara Karin earned top-12 finishes yesterday.
Delice ran 50.02 to break Karl Williams’ 400m hurdles record of 50.34 from 1979 and finished second in his heat – third overall – to advance to his third NCAA Championship and first as a Cavalier.
Andrews and Roller each had personal-best performances as well, both in the 800m. Andrews, the NCAA Champion indoors in the event, won his heat in 1:46.87 to advance to his first outdoor championship, while Roller used a time of 1:47.43 to qualify for his second-consecutive NCAA Outdoor Championship in the 800m. Andrews’ time stands as the third-fastest 800m finish for a Cavalier and best since Paul Ereng set the school record at 1:43.16 in 1989. Roller improved to sixth on the program’s all-time list with his time.
Earlier in the day, Fahringer threw 220’ 5” in the javelin, just shy of his personal-best, to finish ninth and claim a spot at his first-ever NCAA Championship.
In preliminary action, junior Adams Abdulrazaaq advanced to tomorrow’s semifinals of the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.08.
Adams and seven other Cavaliers will compete tomorrow, all vying for a top-12 finish in order to punch their ticket to Eugene on June 9-12. Field events will begin at noon, with track events beginning at 6:30 p.m.
