CHARLOTTESVILLE – Five Cavaliers were named to the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) 2010 All-America teams and head coach Kevin Sauer and associate head coach Steve Pritzker were named National Coach and Assistant Coach of the Year, the organization announced Tuesday (June 8).

Desiree Burns (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), Jennifer Cromwell (Bellevue, Wash.) and Katrin Reinert (Stuttgart, Germany) were named first-team selections, while Helen Tompkins (Friendswood, Texas) and coxswain Sidney Thorsten (Atlanta, Ga.) were named to the second team.

Sauer, who completed his 15th season at the helm of the Cavalier rowing program this spring, led the team to its first-ever NCAA Championship and No. 1 national ranking. UVa also won its fourth-consecutive South/Central Regional Championship and its 10th ACC Championship in 2010.

Sauer has guided Virginia to 14 appearances in the NCAA Championships and seven UVa boats have been crowned NCAA Champions during his tenure. He was also named the South Region and ACC Coach of the Year this season.

Pritzker, who completed his seventh season with the Cavaliers in 2010, earned National Assistant Coach of the Year honors for the second time. He was both the National and South Region Assistant Coach of the Year in 2007.

Burns is a two-time All-America selection after also earning first-team honors in 2009. A member of the Varsity Eight that finished as the silver medalist at the 2010 NCAA Championships, Burns is also a two-time all-region selection, having earned the honor in both 2009 and 2010.

Cromwell becomes the program’s second three-time first-team All-American and the first since Jennifer Reck accomplished the feat from 2002-04. A co-captain and stroke seat of the Varsity Eight, Cromwell was also a three-time first-team all-region honoree.

Reinert, a 2008 Olympian for Germany, rowed with the Varsity Eight. A newcomer to the Cavalier rowing program this year, it is her first All-America honor. She was also a first-team all-region selection.

Tompkins earned her first-ever All-America nod, being named to the second team. She was a second-team all-region selection and rowed with the Varsity Eight.

Thorsten, the Varsity Eight coxswain, is also garnering the first All-America selection of her career. A sophomore, Thorsten was a first-team all-region selection earlier this spring.
