ROBERVAL, Quebec – USA Swimming National Team member and Virginia alum Fran Crippen took bronze in the 5K race Tuesday at the FINA Open Water World Championships in Roberval, Quebec, Canada.

The Conshohocken, Pa., native finished in 57:46.48, behind Germany’s Thomas Lurz (57:42.63) and Russia’s Evgeny Drattsev (57.44.15).

On Sunday, Crippen finished fourth in the men’s 10K race, clocking a time of 2:01.05. That mark was less than six seconds behind the winning time of Italy’s Valerio Cleri, who won in 2:00:59.30.

A two-time Atlantic Coast Conference swimmer of the year and a 12-time All-American as a Cavalier, Crippen has broken onto the open water circuit since he graduated in 2006.
