IRVINE, Calif. – Several members of the Virginia men’s and women’s swimming teams are competing this week at the ConocoPhillips National Championships in Irvine, Calif. Competition began Tuesday and will conclude Saturday.

Rising senior Matt McLean (Sterling, Va.) swam his way into the finals of the 400-meter free, highlighting the Cavaliers on day one. McLean recorded a prelim time of 3:52.37 and went on to finish eighth overall, touching at 3:53.23 in the finals.

Incoming freshman Rachel Naurath (Manakin-Sabot, Va.) earned a spot in the consolation finals of the 400-meter free. She clocked a mark of 4:13.14 in the morning session and placed 13th overall with a time of 4:13.47 in the finals.

Day two of the event continues Wednesday with the women’s 100-meter back, men’s 200-meter free, men’s 100-meter back, women’s 200-meter free and men’s 200-meter fly.
