Andrews Earns 2009-10 ACC Male Sportsmanship Award

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Rising sophomore Robby Andrews earned the 2009-10 ACC Male Sportsmanship Award, which is presented to the student-athlete who best exemplifies sportsmanship.

Andrews, along with Clemson’s Stephanie Buffo and the Georgia Tech baseball team, were selected from a group of institutional nominees, which were submitted by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committees (SAACs) and their advisors at ACC schools. Winners were determined by a review of the overall ACC SAAC.

Andrews, a rising sophomore from Manalapan, N.J., showed both humility and poise after an upset victory in the 800m at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship in March. After capping off an undefeated indoor season and shocking then-senior Andrew Wheating, a 2008 Olympic athlete from Oregon, Andrews shared embraces and sincere congratulations with Wheating. He responded in a post-race interview with great respect to his fellow competitor and noted that he has been a huge fan of Wheating since he competed in the Olympic Trials.

The ACC Men’s Outdoor Track Performer of the Year and indoor and outdoor freshman of the year, Andrews wrapped up his inaugural year as a Cavalier in dominating fashion. Andrews became Virginia’s second-ever individual track and field national champion and claimed the indoor ACC titles in the 800m and as a member of the distance medley relay team. Outdoors, he anchored UVa’s 4x800m relay team to victory at the Penn Relays, finished runner-up to teammate Lance Roller in the 800m at ACCs and to Wheating at NCAAs. He also took third at the 13th IAAF World Junior Championships in Canada this summer, becoming one of the first two Americans to medal in a middle distance event at the meet.

To be considered for the ACC Sportsmanship Award, nominees must have demonstrated good sportsmanship and ethical behavior in his/her daily participation in intercollegiate athletics. The student-athlete must have also demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting and be of good academic standing.
