University Place, WAVirginia senior golfer Amory Davis is tied for 11th place following the opening round of play at the U.S. Amateur Championships taking place at Chambers Bay Golf Club in University Place, Wash. Davis shot 2-under 70 at The Home Course. Play was suspended at 8:17 p.m. PT due to darkness.

Davis had three birdies, 14 pars and 1 bogey during his round.

Classmate Henry Smart was in 142nd place at 5-over 76 and UVa coach Bowen Sargent was 249th at 10-over 81. Both Smart and Sargent played their opening rounds at Chambers Bay. Jeff Wilson, who played The Home Course Monday, has a seven-shot lead on the field after shooting 10-under 62.

Following Tuesday’s second round of stroke play the 312-player field will be cut to 64 competitors for match play that starts Wednesday. The players will switch courses for their second round of stroke play.

Davis is scheduled to start his second round at 1:50 p.m. PT while Smart tees off at 8:15 a.m. and Sargent begins his round at 8:55 a.m.
