CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia men’s team had a strong showing on the first day of the 2010 UVa Ranked Plus One Invitational at the Snyder Tennis Center. The Cavaliers had seven players advance to flight quarterfinals and three doubles team reach flight finals.

Virginia had six singles players advance in the four “A” flights. In A-1, a pair of Cavaliers advanced. Second-seeded Drew Courtney (Clifton, Va.) topped Benjamin Chomette of Old Dominion in three sets. Brian Fang (Hacienda Heights, Calif.) posted the first ranked win of his career, topping No. 86 Joshua Graves of Northwestern 6-2, 7-5.

Sanam Singh (Chandigarh, India), the top seed in the A-2 flight, cruised into the quarterfinals with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Jeremy Feldman of Cornell. Julen Uriguen (Guatemala City, Guatemala) topped No. 116 Arnav Jain of Binghamton 7-5, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals of the A-3 flight.

A pair of Cavalier first-years reached the A-4 quarterfinals. Justin Shane (Falls Church, Va.) posted one of the biggest upsets of the day, defeating 19th-ranked Marek Michalicka of Wisconsin 6-1, 5-7, 6-4. Fellow first-year Alex Domijan (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) won his collegiate debut 6-2, 6-1 over Gilbert Wong of Binghamton.

Dino Dell’Orto (Hong Kong, China) also won his opener, to advance to the quarterfinals of the B draw.

In doubles, three Cavalier teams won a pair of matches on Friday to reach flight finals. In the A-2 flight, the team of Shane and Philippe Oudshoorn (Adeldoorn, The Netherlands) reached the final. The team of Courtney and Domijan reached the A-3 final and the team of Singh and Steven Eelkman Rooda (Amersfoort, The Netherlands) reach the A-4 final.

Play continues on Saturday at the Snyder Tennis Center. The final round of doubles begins at 8:30 a.m., with two rounds of singles to follow.
