CHARLOTTESVILLE-The Virginia men’s basketball team is back in action Tuesday night (Jan. 4) when the Cavaliers host Howard University at John Paul Jones Arena.

The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on the Virginia Sports Radio Network. It is the seventh of eight consecutive home games for UVa.

UVa enters Tuesday’s game with an overall record of 9-5 and the Cavaliers have little preparation time for Howard after a 64-50 home victory over Louisiana State University on Sunday (Jan. 2).

Virginia featured balanced scoring in the win over LSU as six players scored between eight and 15 points. Freshman guard KT Harrell led UVa with 15 points and senior guard Mustapha Farrakhan scored 11 points. Harrell has led the Cavaliers in scoring in each of their last three games and four of their last five.

Freshman forward Akil Mitchell scored a season-high nine points against the Tigers and freshman guard Joe Harris also had nine points. Senior forward Will Sherrill scored eight points, including two three-point field goals late in the game, and sophomore guard Jontel Evans had eight points, six assists, four rebounds and three steals without a turnover.

UVa played without senior forward Mike Scott, the team’s leading scorer (15.9 ppg.) and rebounder (10.2 rpg.), for the fourth time in five games because of an ankle injury.

Farrakhan (10.9 ppg.) and Harrell (10.1 ppg.) are also averaging in double figures in scoring for the Cavaliers. Harris is averaging 9.5 points a game.

Evans continues to lead Virginia in assists with 49 and is averaging 3.5 assists a game.

Virginia leads the series with Howard 3-0 and all three games have been played in Charlottesville. Howard enters Tuesday’s game with an overall record of 2-10 and is coming off an 85-50 home loss to George Washington University on Sunday (Jan. 2).

Sophomore forward Mike Phillips leads Howard in scoring and rebounding. He is averaging 12.3 points and 7.1 rebounds a game. Sophomore guard Anton Dickerson is averaging 11.1 points a game for the Bison and sophomore forward Dadrian Collins is averaging 10.5 points a game.

Kevin Nickelberry is in his first season as head coach at Howard.

The game with Howard is Virginia’s final non-conference game before the Cavaliers turn their attention to Atlantic Coast Conference games. UVa hosts North Carolina at John Paul Jones Arena on Saturday (Jan. 8) in a game that is scheduled to begin at noon and will be televised by the ACC Network. Virginia is 1-0 in the ACC this season after a 57-54 win at Virginia Tech on Dec. 5.
