CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Junior Simone Asque, sophomore Jess O’Shoney and senior AJ Cushman have all been named to the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) All-State Volleyball Team and freshman McKenzie Adams has been voted the state’s Freshman of the Year, as announced by the organization Thursday. Asque and O’Shoney were named to the all-state first team, while Cushman was honored on the second team. Adams becomes the program’s first VaSID Freshman of the Year.

Asque, a two-time honoree on the all-state team, led the Cavaliers in kills and aces this year. The outside hitter finished the season ranked third in the ACC with 3.77 kills per set and second with an average of 0.32 aces per set. Her season total of 419 kills pushed her career total to 1,038, making her the 15th Cavalier to reach 1,000 career kills. The Chicago, Ill., native also recorded her 500th career dig this season and was named to the all-tournament team at the Temple Invitational and Holiday Inn Jefferson Cup.

O’Shoney, making her first appearance on the all-state team, earned All-East Region honorable mention accolades this year. The MVP of the Holiday Inn Jefferson Cup, the Austin, Texas, native was also a member of the all-tournament teams at the Temple Invitational and Marriott Cavalier Classic. The middle blocker led the Cavaliers in hitting percentage and blocks this season and ranked fourth in the ACC with a .338 clip and eighth with a 1.06 blocks per set average.

Cushman is making her first appearance on the all-state team after finishing her career as one of Virginia’s all-time best defenders. The Richmond, Va., native earned 1,432 digs in her four seasons to finish fourth in UVa’s record book for career digs. She also tallied 543 digs this year to rank fourth in the program’s single-season records and finished the year second in the ACC, with an average of 4.89 digs per set. The libero recorded 28 double-digit dig performances this season, marking all but two matches, and registered her first career 30-dig match at Temple.

Adams, the ACC and East Region Freshman of the Year, finished her rookie campaign second on the team in kills, averaging 3.03 per set. Her season total of 264 kills ranks ninth in UVa’s freshmen records for kills, while she also set the program’s freshman record for kills in a match, landing 29 in a five-set victory over Clemson.
