CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia swimmers Peter Geissinger and Liz Shaw have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference performers of the week, the league office announced Tuesday.

Geissinger and Shaw helped Virginia to dual meet victories over the weekend against ACC foes North Carolina and Duke.

Geissinger, a native of Darien, Conn., took the top spot in the 100 butterfly, posting a time of 48.79 and helping the Cavaliers rally from an 84-66 deficit against conference rival North Carolina. His victory was part of a six-event win streak that gave Virginia the lead and eventually the meet, 162-138. Geissinger also finished first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.44 and swam on the victorious 400 freestyle and second-place 200 medley relay, both of which recorded NCAA ‘B’ cuts. He followed that performance Sunday as a member of the winning 200 freestyle relay team and also finished second to teammate Scot Robison in the 200 freestyle with a mark of 1:39.57. The Cavaliers topped Duke 155-132.

Shaw, one of eight women’s seniors recognized this past weekend, claimed three individual titles as the Cavaliers defeated North Carolina, 161.5-138.5. With Virginia trailing by three points heading into the final two events, Shaw led a 1-2-3 UVa finish in the 200 IM, her third individual win on the day. The Richmond, Va., native clocked an NCAA ‘B’ time of 2:00.64 to collect first-place honors in the event. She also won the 100 and 200 butterfly events registering ‘B’ cuts of 54.24 and 1:57.47 respectively. In a 156-132 victory Sunday against Duke, Shaw took first place in the 200 freestyle, posting a ‘B’ time of 1:49.12. She also swam the butterfly leg on the winning 200 medley relay.

Both Virginia squads return to action with a dual meet at Pittsburgh Saturday. Competition is scheduled for 12 p.m.
