BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia track and field team had an all-around solid first day of the VT Elite Meet on Friday in Rector Field House. Led by junior Vincenzo Chiariello – who broke his own school record in the weight throw by 9.25-inches – seven other Cavaliers had personal-best performances that made edits to Virginia’s all-time top-10 records.

After fouling on his initial throw, Chiariello threw a personal-best 60′ 8.75″ on his next toss, before improved his mark again to 61′ 11.5″ on his final attempt. Chiariello’s throw was good for seventh overall.

In the women’s mile, senior Catherine White won the event with a personal-best time of 4:42.80 – a mark that ranks sixth all-time at Virginia. Senior Stephanie Garcia, also making her season debut, finished runner-up to White, earning a time of 4:46.12 – less than one-second shy of her personal-best.

On the men’s side, senior Emil Heineking also improved his best time to 4:04.17 – the sixth-best mark in UVa history – and finished second overall.

Junior Kevin Anding put in an impressive finish in the 400m, crossing second in his heat and third overall with a time of 47.59. That’s the second-best mark in program history, trailing only Kellen Blassingame’s time of 46.73 from 2006.

In field events, junior Erin Wykoff tossed a personal-best 57′ 2.25″ to inch closer to Eliese Mitchell’s school record throw of 65′ 9.75″ from 2002.

Freshman Katherine Walker and junior Anna Corrigan both made their mark on UVa’s 3000m records. Walker finished fourth overall with a time of 9:40.59, while Corrigan followed her across the line in 9:41.98. Those times rank ninth and 10th, respectively, at Virginia.

Rounding out the Cavaliers with all-time top-10 performances was freshman Aaron Shepperd, who improved his time in the 60m hurdles to 8.23. The mark was good for ninth overall and ranks eighth at Virginia.

Virginia also saw senior Lyndsay Harper pick up an individual win in the 800m. Harper led all competitors across the line with a time of 2:10.39.
