Cavaliers Set For 2011 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia track and field team will head to Blacksburg, Va., to compete in the 2011 Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships Thursday through Saturday. The conference meet will be held in Virginia Tech’s Rector Field House, with live stats available on VirginiaSports.com. The ACC will also provide a live video broadcast of the meet beginning Friday at 3 p.m., and Saturday at noon.
Freshman Brittany Bostwick will kick off events for the Cavaliers on Thursday at noon with the pentathlon. The pentathlon and heptathlon are the only events contested on Thursday. All other events will begin on Friday at noon, while Saturday’s events will start at 11 a.m.
Freshman Anthony Kostelac enters the meet with the top time in the ACC over 800m this year with a time of 1:49.47 from the Armory. The Cavaliers’ men’s distance medley relay team also leads the league this season, with a time of 9:36.41 from the VT Elite Meet, while 10 other Cavaliers and the women’s DMR squad rank in the top-five of the ACC.
Senior Catherine White ranks second in the 5000m with a time of 16:35.80 from the Husky Classic and fifth in the mile with her time of 4:42.80 from the VT Elite Meet. Redshirt juniors Ryan Collins and Emil Heineking, in addition to senior Stephanie Garcia and sophomore Brett Johnson all hold top-five times in the league from their performances at the Husky Classic. Collins is second in the 5000m with a time of 13:58.54, while Heineking is second in the 3000m (7:58.36), Garcia’s time of 9:21.69 in the 3000m ranks fourth and Johnson’s mile time of 4:03.62 ranks fifth.
In the shorter distances, senior Adams Abdulrazaaq’s school record time of 7.75 in the 60m hurdles from the Hokie Invite ranks third and junior Kevin Anding’s 400m performance of 47.59 from the VT Elite Meet ranks fourth.
In field events, senior Marcus Robinson’s leap of 51′ 9.75″ in the triple jump at the Hokie Invite ranks second in the ACC, while sophomore Emily Vannoy’s shot put of 49′ 4.5″ at the Armory is fourth. Junior Vincenzo Chiariello’s school record throw of 61′ 11.5″ from the VT Elite Meet in the weight throw ranks fifth in the conference so far this year.
Virginia’s women’s DMR team ran 11:21.19 at the Hokie Invite and is ranked second in the league this season.
Following the ACC Championships, the Cavaliers will split up for one last chance to qualify for the 2011 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. One meet will be held in Blacksburg, Va. – the Virginia Tech Final Qualifier – while the other will be in South Bend, Ind., – the Alex Wilson Invitational. Both meets run on Friday and Saturday, with the NCAA Championships scheduled for Friday and Saturday March 11-12 in College Station, Texas.
