New Orleans, LA – The eighth-ranked Virginia women’s golf team moved up to sixth place after the second round of play at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate taking place in New Orleans.

Virginia shot 4-over 292 during Monday’s second round, a six-shot improvement over the team’s opening round score. Top-ranked Alabama took over the tournament lead after shooting 287 during the second round. The Crimson Tide has a two-day total of 582. Second-ranked USC and 15th-ranked Tulane are tied for second at 586.

Freshman Portland Rosen and All-American Brittany Altomare both shot even par 72 Monday to lead UVa. Rosen moved up to 15th place at 2-over 146. Altomare is tied with Joy Kim for 25th at 4-over 148. Kim and Calle Nielson finished the second round with scores of 3-over 75. Nielson is 39th at 150 and Nicole Agnello carded a 1-over 73 to improve to 56th place at 153.

Alabama’s Stephanie Meadow shot 6-under 66 Monday to climb into the lead at 6-under 138. She is one shot ahead of LSU’s Megan McChrystal.

This is Virginia’s first tournament of the spring season. Every team in the field is ranked in the current Golfstat top-50 poll including seven of the top 10 teams in the nation.
