CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia softball team (14-12) fell to Fordham 9-1 in five innings in the final game of the UVa Spring Break Invitational Monday at The Park. The Cavaliers finished the tournament with a 2-3 mark.

Fordham was unblemished at 5-0 on the weekend and is 14-10 on the year.

The Cavaliers were outhit 9-2 in the contest; freshman Marcy Bowdren hit her third home run in as many days – a shot to left center to lead off the fourth – for Virginia’s lone run. Junior Giannina Cipolloni had the team’s other hit – a single in the third inning.

Fordham put up six runs in the top of the first inning, including five off UVa starter Erica Cipolloni. Junior Stephanie Coates came on to throw in the final 4 2/3 innings of the game and finished with two strikeouts.

Fordham’s All-American pitcher Jen Mineau earned the win in the complete-game outing. She tallied with five strikeouts. Gabby Luety led the Rams at the plate; she was 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBI.

Virginia opens Atlantic Coast Conference play at home Saturday against Boston College. The two teams will play a doubleheader Saturday (12 p.m. and 2 p.m.) and conclude the series at 12 p.m. Sunday.
