Cavaliers Continue Homestand Against Georgetown and Maryland

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia softball team (14-15, 0-3 ACC) will look to snap its six-game losing skid with four games at home this week. The Cavaliers will face Georgetown at 4 p.m. Thursday before playing a three-game ACC series against Maryland at The Park. Live statistics for all four games will be available at VirginiaSports.com.
The Cavaliers and Terrapins open the conference series with a doubleheader at 12 p.m. Saturday, with the third and final game set for 12 p.m. Sunday.
Georgetown is 6-21 on the year and will face Utah at 6 p.m. Wednesday before heading to Charlottesville to take on the Cavaliers. The Hoyas most recently split a doubleheader with Drexel (W 4-2, L 4-2) on Tuesday night at home.
Cara Savarese leads Georgetown at the plate this season with a .329 average while contributing six doubles. Teammate Mackensey Carter adds a .299 average with four doubles, three home runs and a team-best eight RBI.
Eight Georgetown pitchers have seen action in the circle this season. Carter has seen the most time, recording a 3.15 ERA in a team-high 17 appearances. She is 5-10 on the year with 48 strikeouts in 93 1/3 innings or work.
The Cavaliers and Hoyas have met just once before, a 4-0 Georgetown win at The Park during the 2008 campaign.
Maryland is 20-9 on the year and will carry its 11-game winning streak into Charlottesville to open Atlantic Coast Conference play.
The Terrapins are coming off a 5-0 performance in its own round-robin tournament, including wins over Princeton (6-0), Utah (6-0), Hampton (9-1) and Villanova twice (5-0 and 1-0), outscoring opponents 26-1.
Maryland senior Kerry Hickey, who shared co-ACC pitcher of the week honors, leads the Terps this season. In the circle, she has a 2.19 ERA to go along with 118 strikeouts in 9 1/3 innings of work. At the plate, she boasts a team-best 24 RBI.
Five Maryland hitters have an average above .300, led by Bree Hanafin’s .415 average. Hanafin also adds five home runs and six doubles and leads the Terps with 20 runs scored. Vangie Galindo hits .374 and paces Maryland on the basepaths (9-of-10 stolen bases).
Virginia leads the all-time series with Maryland, 31-17. A year ago, the Cavaliers defeated Maryland 5-1 and 3-1 in an ACC doubleheader in College Park, Md.
