CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia softball team (16-19) welcomes in-state foe James Madison for a midweek game Wednesday at The Park. Instead of a doubleheader that was originally scheduled, the two teams will play just one game at 4 p.m.

The Cavaliers are coming off their first Atlantic Coast Conference win of the season, a 3-1 victory over North Carolina on Sunday, though the Tar Heels claimed the series 2-1.

Freshman Stephanie Harris continues to pace the Virginia offense, hitting .343 with a team-best 23 RBI. She also has three triples on the year. Senior Alison Pittman contributes a .297 average and is one of three Cavaliers with 10-plus stolen bases on the year (11).

Sophomore pitcher Melanie Mitchell returned to the circle vs. UNC and picked up her first win since March 12 with the victory on Sunday. On the season, Mitchell posts a 3.31 ERA with 142 strikeouts in 124 2/3 innings of work. She has tossed 15 complete games.

James Madison is 23-10 this year and completed a series sweep over George Mason at home last weekend, winning 4-3, 7-3 and 7-1.

Sophomore Jasmine Butler leads the Dukes with a .417 average at the plate and also adds 16 RBI. Junior Ashley Burnham hits .387 with a team-best seven doubles, 11 home runs and 28 RBI.

In the circle, three JMU pitchers have shared the pitching duties. Sophomore Cara Stecher is 10-1 on the year with a 2.84 ERA. She has a staff-best 59 strikeouts in 81 1/3 innings of work. Senior Olivia McPherson posts a 1.86 ERA with 49 strikeouts in 82 2/3 innings, while freshman Brittany Jeans has a 3.06 ERA with 39 strikeouts in 61 2/3 innings.

Virginia leads the all-time series with JMU, 22-11. Last year, the Cavaliers earned a hard-fought 5-4 victory in Harrisonburg, Va.
