CHARLOTTESVILLE – Second-ranked Virginia picked up a victory over No. 3 USC in the Second Varsity Eight on Sunday at Lake Monticello. The Trojans won the Varsity Eight and Varsity Four races vs. the Cavaliers.

UVa’s Second Varsity Eight of coxswain Molly Frear, MacKenzie Leahy, Carli Goldberg, Carolyn Glandorf, Jenny Shultis, Morgan Joseph, Brandy Herald, Cara Linnenkohl and Hunter Terry wrapped up the weekend of competition with a 2-1 record, defeating ranked foes No. 17 UCLA and No. 3 USC after falling to No. 8 Michigan State on Friday night. UVa’s time on Sunday vs. USC was 6:29.2, more than three seconds better than the Trojans’ time of 6:32.7.

In the Varsity Eight, Virginia trailed the Trojans at the halfway mark and ended up finishing second with a time of 6:27.1. USC’s time was 6:18.3. Virginia’s Varsity Eight crew is Coxswain Sidney Thorsten, Kristine O’Brien, Christine Roper, Keziah Beall, Martha Kuzzy, Fiona Schlesinger, Marelle Myers, Claudia Blandford and Taylor Levine.

UVa’s Varsity Four (coxswain Sarah Jordan, Ruth Retzinger, Caroline Sweeny, Chelsea Simpson, Lauren Shook) also finished second (7:19.0) to USC (7:11.2).

Racing against Clemson, Virginia’s Third Varsity Eight (coxswain Brittany Wengel, Mary Nilan, Erin Metcalf, Lieve Pitts, Colleen Bauk, Katherine Stewart, Ashley Hendrickson, Colleen Warren, Elspeth Missel) won with a time of 6:54.8. The Tigers’ time was 7:11.0.

The Second Varsity Four of coxswain Sarah Shanfield, Liza Tullis, Emily Pik, Kaity McCullough and Ann Reid finished first with a time of 7:22.9. In second place was UVa’s crew of coxswain Miriam Kaplan, Allison Mayberry, Betsy Nilan, Dana Walsh and Susanne Grainger (7:30.9). Clemson was third with a time of 7:36.2.

Rounding out the competition, Virginia’s Novice Four (coxswain Isabella Artiles, Kerry Wilson, Kelsey Shea, Ellen Buckley, Katie Brown) finished second (8:03.3) to Clemson (7:55.2).

Following the regatta, Virginia seniors Colleen Bauk, Claudia Blandford, Susie Chalker, Miriam Kaplan, Lieve Pitts, Christine Roper, Lauren Shook and Caroline Sweeny were honored after rowing in their final home races.

Virginia will prepare for the 2011 ACC Championships, being held on Saturday (April 23) at Clemson’s Lake Hartwell, this week.
