Erin, WI – Virginia senior golfer Ben Kohles got off to a solid start Monday during the first day of competition at the 2011 U.S. Amateur Championships taking place in Erin, Wisc. Kohles shot 2-under 68 on the Blue Mound Golf & Country Club course and was tied for 21st place.

A trio of players shared the first round lead at 5-under par.

Former Cavalier Will Collins was in 62nd place at even par 72 while playing the Erin Hills course. Freshman Denny McCarthy was in 95th place after shooting 73 at Erin Hills while senior Bruce Woodall was 199th after posting a round of 4-over at Erin Hills.

The second day of stroke play takes place Tuesday before match play begins Wednesday. The tournament runs through Sunday. Live results are at USGA.org.
