CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia volleyball team improved to 2-1 on the season and ended the Marriott Cavalier Classic with a victory, defeating Western Carolina 3-0 (25-12, 25-10, 25-18), Saturday (Aug. 27) at Memorial Gymnasium.

“It’s nice to rebound from Friday night,” Virginia head coach Lee Maes said. “I thought Friday night was a great opportunity for us. We had a lot of excitement and energy and we’ll bring that to the season. Today was a better reflection of how we’re finding cohesiveness and consistency in what we’re trying to do. We know there were a lot of things we gained from this weekend, and we’re looking forward to taking what we’ve learned, getting back into the gym and getting better. What is going to be more relevant is how well we compete on a daily basis, and that’s what we’re looking forward to next week.”

Juniors Jessica O’Shoney (Austin, Texas) and Beth Wildermuth (San Clemente, Calif.) were named to the all-tournament team. O’Shoney led the Cavaliers with 12 kills against the Catamounts, while Wildermuth tallied 28 assists and added a kill and three digs.

The Cavaliers hit .320 in set one, .448 in set two and .268 in set three to put Western Carolina away.

The Catamounts (0-3) were led by Abbey Scroggins’ eight kills and six digs.

Western Michigan finished the Marriott Cavalier Classic with a 3-0 record after defeating USC Upstate, 3-0, earlier in the evening. Lena Oliver of the Broncos was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

Rachel Clark (Los Angeles, Calif.) chipped in eight kills and freshman Tori Janowski (Sterling, Va.) ended an impressive debut tournament with eight kills and eight digs.

Emily Rottman (Santa Barbara, Calif.) finished with a match-high 15 digs from her libero position.
