NORFOLK, Va. – The third-ranked Virginia field hockey team (2-2) fell to No. 12 Old Dominion (4-0) by a score of 4-1 Sunday at the Powhatan Sports Complex in Norfolk, Va. Sophomore Carissa Vittese tallied UVa’s goal in the second half.

The Monarchs, unbeaten after defeating top-ranked and defending national champion Maryland 4-0 Friday prior to its meeting with Virginia, outshot the Cavaliers 12-5, including a 9-2 margin in the first half.

It took 33 seconds for Old Dominion to get on the board as the Monarchs accumulated three goals in the first half. Kathryn Kirk registered the first goal, unassisted, before Christy Longacre notched her first of the season on a penalty corner in the 24th minute. Maartje vanRijswijk rounded out the first half scoring with another goal 1:02 later.

ODU then jumped out to a 4-0 lead when Kirk notched her second score of the game in the 57th minute.

Vittese put Virginia on the board in the 64th minute, scoring off a rebounded shot on a penalty corner. It was her second goal of the season.

For the game, Old Dominion held a 6-4 advantage on penalty corners.

UVa freshman goalkeeper Jenny Johnstone played the entire game in the cage and finished with five saves.

The Cavaliers face another in-state rival Wednesday with a 7 p.m. contest at James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va.
