OXFORD, Ohio – Freshman Jessica White’s first career goal in the 69th minute proved to be the game-winner as the No. 7 Virginia field hockey team (4-2) defeated Miami 2-1 Friday in Oxford, Ohio. Junior Britt Knouse also scored for the Cavaliers.

Miami tied the game 1-1 in the 51st minute, converting on a penalty corner after stepping up the pressure in the second half.

Heading into the final two minutes, senior Alex Jahnle stepped up into the circle and passed the pall to White, who punched it through to give Virginia the win.

The Cavaliers outshot Miami 13-7 for the game, including an 8-2 advantage in the first half. Virginia also registered seven penalty corners to MU’s five.

UVa got on the board in the eighth minute after a nice passing sequence from White to Jess Orrett to Britt Knouse, who deflected the ball into the cage. It was her third goal of the season and Virginia led 1-0 at halftime.

The Miami (1-4) goal was scored by Brittany Branco, unassisted, following a UVa save on a penalty corner.

Virginia freshman goalkeeper Jenny Johnstone registered four saves, while Miami’s Sarah Mueller also finished with four stops.

The Cavaliers continue competition in Ohio with a 1 p.m. game vs. Michigan State Saturday at the MU Turf Field in Oxford, Ohio.
