CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia men’s tennis team opened its 2011 fall season as play began at the UVa Ranked+1 Invitational. Friday’s play was moved indoors to the Boar’s Head Sports Club due to rain, with the first round of singles and doubles were played.

Virginia had six players advance to flight quarterfinals in singles. In the blue draw, third-seeded Justin Shane (Falls Church, Va.) downed Robert Hall of Louisville 7-5, 6-3. Steven Rooda (Amersfoort, The Netherlands) also advanced, topping Julian Sullivan of NC State 6-3, 6-3. Jarmere Jenkins (College Park, Ga.), the top seed in the orange draw, won 6-1, 6-2 over Patrick O’Keefe of Radford. Philippe Oudshoorn (Apeldoorn, The Netherlands) also advanced in that draw, with a 6-0, 6-0 win over William Parker of North Carolina. Mitchell Frank (Annandale, Va.), the top seed in white singles, won his collegiate debut, topping Ruben Devos of Binghamton 6-1, 6-3. Santiago Villegas (Bogota, Colombia) advanced with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Thomas Dehean of Radford.

In doubles, the second-seeded duo of Frank and Villegas reached the semifinals of blue doubles with an 8-3 win over Stijn Meulemans and Dehean of Radford. Jenkins and Julen Uriguen (Guatemala City, Guatemala) reached the semifinals of the orange doubles with an 8-6 win over Nick Sayer and O’Keefe of Radford. Virginia had two teams advance to the semifinals in white doubles, with top-seeded Drew Courtney (Clifton, Va.) and Rooda having a bye, and Shane and Oudshoorn defeating Devos and Bastian Bornkessel of Binghamton, 8-5.

The tournament continues Saturday at the Snyder Tennis Center (weather permitting) with play beginning at 9 a.m. Sunday’s action also begins at 9 a.m. Admission is free.
