No. 7 Cavaliers and No. 4 Blue Devils Play to Scoreless Draw

DURHAM, N.C. – The No. 7 Virginia women’s soccer team continued its four-game road-trip with a 0-0 draw Thursday night at No. 4 Duke. It was the second consecutive shutout posted by the Cavalier defense against a top-five team on the road.
The Cavaliers move to 8-2-2 overall (2-1-1 ACC) with the draw, while Duke (11-1-1, 3-0-1 ACC) had its seven-game win streak snapped.
“It wasn’t our best performance, but we got a point on the road,” said head coach Steve Swanson. “In this conference, you take your points when you can get them. You feel good about that, but we looked a little bit tired and we weren’t as sharp as we normally are. Credit Duke for some of that because they are a very good team and they presented some problems for us. We battled hard, competed hard and our defense was very good. Hopefully that will continue.”
The teams played a scoreless first half, marking the third consecutive game the Cavaliers were tied 0-0 at the break. Duke’s Kelly Cobb nearly gave the Blue Devils the lead in the 55th minute, as she fired a shot off the crossbar. Virginia had a chance in the 76th minute as a corner kick came to Amber Fry (Northfield, Ill.) in front of the goal, but her shot was blocked by a Blue Devil defender. Morgan Brian’s (St Simons Island, Ga.) long-distance shot was headed towards the far post in the 86th minute, but Tara Campbell’s fingertip save pushed it just wide. On the other end, Cobb hit the crossbar a second time in the 88th minute, as regulation ended scoreless.
In the extra 20 minutes, both teams traded chances, but neither side could find a game-winning goal.
Each team recorded 20 shots in the game, while Virginia had a 12-4 corner kick edge. Chantel Jones (Midlothian, Va.) made a season-high four saves for the Cavaliers, posting her second consecutive shutout, her sixth of the season. It was also her 39th career shutout, as she moved into sole possession of third place on the NCAA’s career shutout record book. Campbell made eight saves in goal for Duke.
The Cavaliers conclude their four-game road trip on Sunday as they visit No. 6 Wake Forest. Game time in Winston-Salem is set for 1 p.m. Virginia returns home on October 8 as its hosts No. 10 Florida State.
