CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia women’s lacrosse head coach Julie Myers announced Wednesday (Oct. 5) that seniors Julie Gardner and Josie Owen have been named captains for the 2012 season.

“Julie and Josie have been leaders on our team since they arrived,” Myers said. “It is great to see them have captain by their name. They are extremely hard workers and set a great example for their teammates both on and off the field. I’m looking forward to them leading the way to a successful season.”

Gardner (Severna Park, Md.), a midfielder, was named a third-team All-American and first-team All-South Region in 2011 by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA). She started all of the Cavaliers’ 18 games and finished the season with 33 goals and 27 assists for a team-high 60 points. A member of the 2011 All-ACC team and Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) All-State team, Gardner scored multiple goals on 11 occasions and dished out multiple assists eight times. She had at least one point in every game, including 15 games with multiple points, and five hat tricks.

Owen (Gibson Island, Md.), an attacker, scored 40 goals and added 16 assists in 2011. She scored a goal in every regular-season game and had multiple points in all but one game. Owen recorded seven hat tricks last season and led the team with 43 draw controls.

The Cavaliers continue their fall ball season with a Wednesday (Oct. 5) scrimmage at James Madison at 7 p.m.
