LOS ANGELES – The Virginia women’s tennis team began play in the main draw of the ITA All-American Championships on Thursday at the Riviera Country Club. For the first time in program history, the Cavaliers had two players in the singles field of 32.

Lindsey Hardenbergh (Fairfax Station, Va.), ranked No. 18 nationally, fell in the first round to 35th-ranked Petra Niedermayerova of Kansas State, 6-2, 6-1. Emily Fraser (Rye, N.Y.), who reached the main draw through qualifying, lost to ninth-ranked Chelsey Gullickson of Georgia, the 2010 NCAA singles champion, 6-3, 6-2. Both players will be in action Friday in the consolation draw.

Virginia will begin main draw doubles play on Friday. The seventh-seeded team of Fraser and Hana Tomljanovic (Boca Raton, Fla.), along with the eighth-seeded team of Hardenbergh and Erin Vierra (Norwell, Mass.) both had byes through Thursday’s first round.

Play continues Friday and runs through Sunday.
